S.C.W.A.A.M.P. and Alan Johnson

Privilege, Power, and Difference begins with the author saying we are all in trouble. One out of every five female college students is sexually assaulted. People with disabilities are more likely to be abused inside and outside the home because they are perceived as weak. The LGBTQ community faces harassment and discrimination. The world today is dangerous. This does not make sense. People are social beings. We want to feel like we belong to something bigger than ourselves, whether in a community or society. Despite this, we have become prisoners of something we have built as a society. Although we are capable of being creative and loving, we do not always choose this path. This is due to privilege and differences. As a society, we prioritize some groups at the expense of others. Privilege causes a divide between people. We are divided into income, wealth, dignity, health, safety, and quality of life categories. The existence of this divide fosters fear, suspicion, discrimination, rage, harassment, and violence. This division stems from our society's privilege. It pits us against each other. The privileged group is the dominant group. This is the group that is also most visible. The issue is one of privilege rather than difference. The problem with difference stems from oppression and privilege of the dominant group. To understand everything, we must first understand our roles and who we are as individuals and social beings.

  1. I really like your point about how despite humans being social beings with the capacity to show love and care for others, the divisions that we as a society have built have caused many to show violence, fear, and discrimination toward others rather than fostering empathy and understanding.

  2. Hi! Like Jordan said, I like how you included points about women and LGBTQ communities and the injustice they face. I like how you stated that we prioritize some groups at the expense of others. This made me think of how men are so praised in the face of the family, yet a family is made by more than one person.

  3. I liked how you used different real life examples as a way to make more connections with the reading :)
