The Academic and Social Value of Ethnic Studies

This week's blog video and article taught me a lot about ethnic studies and their advantages to students and society.     The video discusses school systems. Schooling systems are and have always changed, with following administrative alterations caused by conquest or shifting purposes. Another example is the rise in global communication, which has led to widespread system adoption. While the idea of an industrial-age civilization removing free choice has become a reality, is there conclusive evidence to support it? We continue to progress even after being raised in or developing versions of such institutions, with clearly more technologies available than in the early years of public schooling.     The article talks about  the academic and social importance of ethnic studies. The curriculum represents the information, beliefs, and views that are deemed significant and deserving of being passed down to the next generation; therefore, it serves as a foundation...

The Four "I"s of Oppression

Image
The Four "I"s of Oppression gave me a better understanding of the various forms that injustice takes in our society. The four l's of oppression are ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized. Each represents a different level at which oppression occurs and affects individuals and communities. Ideological oppression  is about the big ideas that justify and support unfair treatment between groups. For example, the belief that one race is superior to another can lead to racism. These ideas shape how people think about others and justify unfairness . Institutional oppression  happens within organizations like the government, schools, or businesses. It includes laws and policies that don't treat everyone equally. A clear example is when a school district provides more resources and better equipment to schools in wealthier areas compared to those in poorer neighborhoods . Interpersonal oppression  occurs between individuals. It happens when someone directly...

OTHER PEOPLE'S CHILDREN

Image
Upon reading the author Lisa Delpits's Other people's children : Cultural conflict in the classroom, one can truly understand the need and importance for teachers to become what Delpit calls 'cultural transmitter' in order to solve the issue of miscommunication amongst different culture that have failed students of color in school across the United States.      In the book, Delpit stresses the need for teachers to become 'cultural transmitters', which essentially means for teachers educating students of color to balance teaching them about the current system we live under in American while also validating their culture and listening to their voices. She emphasizes in her writing how students of different races learn differently and that one particular approach to teaching academic content to a class does not work for every student. Delpit claims that unlike students of middle-class white families that tend to specifically value achievement, "... rese...

S.C.W.A.A.M.P. and Alan Johnson

Privilege, Power, and Difference begins with the author saying we are all in trouble. One out of every five female college students is sexually assaulted. People with disabilities are more likely to be abused inside and outside the home because they are perceived as weak. The LGBTQ community faces harassment and discrimination.   The world today is dangerous. This does not make sense. People are social beings. We want to feel like we belong to something bigger than ourselves, whether in a community or society. Despite this, we have become prisoners of something we have built as a society. Although we are capable of being creative and loving, we do not always choose this path. This is due to privilege and differences. As a society, we prioritize some groups at the expense of others.   Privilege causes a divide between people. We are divided into income, wealth, dignity, health, safety, and quality of life categories. The existence of this divide fosters fear, susp...
